About Mid-Mo Norml

Mid-Missouri NORML is a chapter of Missouri NORML or the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. We’ve been around since 1975. Our mission? Create just laws towards marijuana and create a community of like-minded marijuana activists. On the first Thursday of the month, we meet at 6:30 pm at Shakespeare’s South (or by Zoom if necessary).

We’ve been busy reforming out-of-touch marijuana laws in Missouri. In 2004, mid-Missouri NORML members wrote, put on the ballot and PASSED a Columbia city ordinance— decriminalizing marijuana and paraphernalia possession in city limits.

Eleven years later, our chapter worked to free Jeff Mizanskey, a man sentenced to life in prison for nonviolent marijuana crimes. Mid-Missouri NORML Member-At-Large Dan Viets represented Mr. Mizanskey and, with the signatures gathered by other members of the club, encouraged Governor Jay Nixon to grant a pardon and release Mizanskey from prison.

Mid-Missouri NORML’s greatest accomplishment yet came in 2018, when Amendment 2 was passed, legalizing medical marijuana in the state. Without our chapter spearheading signature-gathering efforts in the area, Amendment 2 wouldn’t have seen the ballot.

While we’re proud of our accomplishments, we aren’t resting our laurels, either. We won’t rest until every people stop getting arrested for marijauna crimes. Until children aren’t taken away from their parents for smoking a joint. Until each person in prison for nonviolent marijuana crimes is free.
